The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) released economic growth for the third quarter of 2020 based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of various sectors. In its release, BPS noted that only the agricultural sector experienced positive growth, which grew by 2.15 percent (y on y).

The Head of BPS, Kecuk Suhariyanto, said that the growth was inseparable from the condition of the price of oil palm and soybean food commodities in the international market in the third quarter which increased (q to q) and (y on y).

“Agriculture, forestry and fisheries dominate the business field processing industry by 14.68 percent. The role of agriculture and several other industries in the Indonesian economy reaches 54.13 percent,” said Kecuk Suhariyanto, Thursday, November 5, 2020.

Suhariyanto said that overall the national economy in the third quarter of 2020 grew better by 5.05 percent (q to q). Based on the records, the 7 sectors for business fields annually are still growing positively. The seven sectors are agriculture, real estate, health services and water supply.

“On a quarterly basis, Indonesia’s GDP shows positive growth and is quite high. This means that there is a significant economic improvement to move into the fourth quarter,” he said.

Regarding this, the Head of the Public Relations and Public Information Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) said that this growth is predicted to continue until 2021. This occurs because agricultural production in all Indonesian provinces continues.

“We must be optimistic, because agriculture is the backbone of the Indonesian economy,” said Suhariyanto.

Previously, BPS also noted that the agricultural sector’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2020 increased by 2.19 percent when compared to the first quarter of only 0.02 percent.
